Possible Topics

Dolce and Gabana ads and how they explore and escape the boundaries of sexuality and gender roles.

The use of gender and age range specific appeals by auto companies ads,i.e. Ford trucks being "built tough," implying that a man can gain true masculinity by driving a Ford truck.

Video Game companies use of violence in ads to reflect the average gamers desire for violence in their gaming experience.

I'm not sure which I'll go with but I think the Dolce and Gabana ads would present the most interesting topic.

  1. I realize the D+G "gang rape" ad has received a lot of attention, but it is part of a whole series of outrageous images. Make sure you limit your discussion to just a few of these images, since the way they communicate is pretty complex. btw do they reinforce existing gender roles as well as "explore and escape" gender roles?

  3. You shouldn't assume that the ads "reflect the average level of desire for violence." Some people may be turned off by violence, so they don't buy games. Most people may find looking at something violent (like a car wreck) irresistible when they drive by one, but that doesn't mean they feel good about looking at car wrecks. You might begin by questioning assumptions. Then see how these ads reinforce stereotypes and other cultural conventions.

  5. I'm not sure out of the three, which would present an interesting topic. The D&G one is kind of hazy to me because I can't quite describe how D&G ads straddle the line of male sexuality. And with the gaming topic, another stereotype could be that most games are marketed to a male audience. Also what are your thoughts on the third topic?

  6. If you are still unsure, reread the assignment sheet and the article. See what kinds of ads you can find on each of the topics. Then make your decision. Any of them could be interesting. The link between video games and masculinity sounds interesting.
