Themes for Modernism

I know that Barnard described four themes of modernism:
- self-reflexiveness
- montage
- use of paradox, ambiguity, and uncertainty
- loss of an integrated individual subject.

I am wondering, what is the fifth theme. Seeing it was being asked for the five themes of modernism on the worksheet. If anyone is able to help me, please let me know, I would appreciate it.

  1. Patti and I were just discussing this as well. We decided that the four obvious listed were part of it, and then the possible fifth was the "optimism" mentioned in the second paragraph, pg. 113. He talks about the "contradicting... belief in progress" and I took that as meaning the fact that the design was either to go along with the modernity of the world, or to go against it and give people a break from the modernity as talked about later in the article.

I don't know if that makes complete sense but it is the closest thing to a fifth theme that I could find.

  2. Modernism is so emo... "but it itself is split between a belief in the positive value of the new and a mistrust in the modern world, including itself". The fifth element can also be an attempt to represent things that could not be represented and to improve the understanding of 'reality' in the modern world.

  3. Yeah Shivani, I can see what you are saying about the "belief in progress", now that you mention it. And Patti, that quote "Modernism is so emo" made me laugh. :D

Thank you both for your input and help. I really appreciate it. :)
