The One Club Creative Bootcamp
The One Club is holding four-day "creative boot camps"  in New York, LA, Chicago, and Atlanta. Sign up to attend FOR FREE  at Morehouse College November 1 - 4.

Creative Boot Camp is an intensive 4-day workshop introducing students to the creative side of advertising. Students work on behalf of a real client and follow steps outlined by the industry — receiving a brief, concepting, creating a campaign, and pitching it to a group of top industry creatives who determine the best work.

Who knows? You might be able to wrangle some extra credit for participating.

Neat Connection..

Hey, so during class today while we were looking at the different forms of writing, we looked at a slide that had letter forms with ligatures on it and it reminded me of some typography I saw while traveling in Colombia this year. Via de Leiva is an old city close to Bogota that I visited, and they had this sign. Most of the houses, buildings, and signs are originals and have been kept in really great shape from around a hundred years ago... Just wanted to see if anyone had any comments or was interested :)

What's so universal about Universal Modernism?

at Swissted

I'd love your impressions of these, since they are mostly bands more popular in my youth than yours. It might be interesting to think of current musicians presented in this way.

Urbanized
Tue, Nov 8th @ Plaza Theater
7-9 pm
Members: $13 / Students $13
Join director Gary Hustwit and Urbanized cast member Ellen Dunham-Jones for a special preview screening and post-film discussion. Presented in association with AIGA Atlanta.
Urbanized is a feature-length documentary about the design of cities, which looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design and features some of the world's foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers. Over half the world's population now lives in an urban area, and 75% will call a city home by 2050. But while some cities are experiencing explosive growth, others are shrinking. The challenges of balancing housing, mobility, public space, civic engagement, economic development, and environmental policy are fast becoming universal concerns. Yet much of the dialogue on these issues is disconnected from the public domain.

Quick recap of modern movement

Pre-industrial: cultural products (buildings, furniture, clothing, music, art) from semi-skilled artisans and amateurs.

Late 19th century: professionalization of cultural production and de-skilling of other kinds of production.

Culture split between Fine Art, which is beautiful but useless,
and utilitarian goods, which are cheap and nasty. Explosion of Kitsch. The “Art Poster” and Arts and Crafts movements are attempts to bridge the gap.

20th Century Modernism: attempt to erase difference between “high” and “low” culture.
Produce utilitarian goods of highest quality in factories. Reject “art for art’s sake.” Advocate styles that can be produced, and used, by all people.
